A recurring question of pre-season is ‘why is Tahith Chong playing?’ and it is a question that will be on a lot of lips inside Old Trafford. He has wasted one fine chance and another just then. Ten Hag is primarily using players likely to be in his plans once the season properly starts but it is difficult to see why Chong is getting a look-in, other than the fact he is Dutch.
Martinez is enjoying his duel with Radamel Falcao, a match-up of an Argentinian and a Colombian. Raphael Varane has been rusty again. Eriksen has probably been United’s most consistent performer and was unfortunate with that curler; the goalie was not getting to it.
Garnacho and Ronaldo have threatened on the ball inside the final third but United have not been able to have as much control of the ball as they have in previous games this month. Garner and Van de Beek have been all right without taking the game by the lapels.
Cristiano Ronaldo might have only returned to training on Tuesday morning but he’s looked sharp with the ball today, which was probably to be expected. His link up play has been excellent and he hasn’t looked short of enthusiasm. It would be a surprise if he managed to play the full 90 minutes, mind.
Cristiano Ronaldo did not seem to massively appreciate Ten Hag’s directive in the 34th minute when he made a beeline for him during a stoppage. United have been more dependent on the counter-attack today and there have been some lively moments from Garnacho but there has been little incision in the final third, especially down Chong’s side. Laird has looked a little fazed as well.
James Garner is endeavouring to make an impression and had to be calmed down by Ten Hag as he is already on a yellow. Will Fish, Charlie Savage and Amad have warmed up and you would imagine there will be some changes at the pause.
