Chelsea defender will be a Barcelona player “this week” with medical and contract almost completed

After months of stalemate, the future of Chelsea’s star defender looks to be sealed in the coming days.

The speculation about a possible free transfer to Barcelona has been going around for months, if not a year, but it’s only recently picked up steam.

Today, Sport, a Catalan newspaper closely associated with Barca, reports that a deal will be finalised “this week.”

He appears to have finished the first stage of his medical and will undergo the second part today. To make things official, all he has to do now is sign an agreement that has already been reached.

However, it looks like the German’s plan to keep Christensen has failed and he will be joining Xavi’s Barcelona side.

It’s a huge blow to Chelsea, obviously. A home grown, 25 year old defender is set to leave the club just as he seems to be reaching his peak. But it does at least conclude his situation, allowing the club to start planning for his successor.
