Watch: Scott McTominay Goal | Melbourne Victory 1-1 Manchester United

Ten Hag is already quite animated and it has nothing to do with the possibility of speaking to the media. He wanted United to move higher up the pitch more urgently in possession there and he is now on the case of Fernandes and Shaw.

That was a magnificent team goal, started by the goalkeeper. Every Melbourne player hit their cue and the brilliance of the goal overshadows the dreadfulness of the defending.

But from United’s perspective it was truly dreadful. We’ve seen that from Shaw and Lindelof before and Maguire can barely go a game without being off the pace. It did not reflect well on any of them.

Maguire is starting as the right centre-back, which is insignificant in essence but playing him on the left side was somehow cited as an excuse for his error-strewn performances last season. United are, of course, about to sign a left-footed centre-back. Maguire is getting cheered whenever he gets the ball.

Fernandes just broke off from the line-up to embrace Nani in the Melbourne technical area. Nani was sold so cheaply by United that a year later he played a key role in Portugal’s European Championship triumph in France. It is easy to forget he has had a garlanded career at club and international level.

GOAL! McTominay finds the back of the net with a deflected effort. That was very fortunate, but you’ve got to buy a ticket to win the raffle.
