Martial again finds himself driving forward into a huge space. He finds Rashford to his left, but Cancelo dispossesses the United man before he can break into the box. City try a pre-planned set piece routine as a corner is floated to Mahrez on the edge of the box. He lashes a volley over the bar.
Half a chance for Martial as a Fernandes cross flicks off the head of Dias and loops towards the back post. Martial gets his head to it but can’t generate the power to trouble Ederson. Shaw whips the set piece towards the near post and De Bruyne heads clear.
A promising City attack comes to a disappointing end. De Bruyne slides a pass through to Jesus, who for some reason chooses to cut back instead of immediately shooting. He finds Mahrez, who in turn moves the ball on to De Bruyne. The Belgian’s cross from the byline is easily cut out.
Out of nothing, United have a second! Shaw drives forward from the left and finds Rashford, who cuts inside and returns the ball to the left-back. He still has plenty to do, but manages to squeeze his shot through Rodri’s legs and into the bottom right corner.
That’s a brilliant finish from Luke Shaw, but it’s an excellent contribution from Dean Henderson as well.
His distribution was sharp, opting for the throw rather than sending the ball long and putting United back under pressure. It was a good throw and a calm piece of play and while Shaw did the hard work, it started with a good bit of goalkeeping.
