This is the third season with the final four format of the Supercopa de Espana. It’s also the third year in which the two finalists didn’t actually win either the previous season’s LaLiga Santander or Copa del Rey title. The players are out for the warm-ups and, as usual, it’s the goalkeepers who come out the tunnel first. There are many fans already in the stands, most of them supporting Real Madrid.
Unai Simon has to make an important intervention there. Casemiro gets off a shot, which the Basque goalkeeper manages to reach and tip over the crossbar. Athletic Club’s players are angry as Mendy brings down Berenguer when the Basque side were counter-attacking. But, it was a clean tackle by the French left-back.
From that resulting corner, Eder Militao challenges Unai Simon for a ball in the air. The centre-back gets to it, but the ball flies over the bar and Athletic can breathe easy again. Athletic Club have another foray forward and Oihan Sancet has a go. It’s deflected over Courtois’ crossbar for a corner, which Yeray Alvarez heads wide.
Rodrygo is once again the man making things happen for Real Madrid. After taking down a crossfield ball well, he tees up Benzema and the French striker’s attempt goes just wide, with a corner given even though there was no touch.
Athletic Club then go up the other end and Inaki Williams gets inside the Real Madrid penalty area. He then screams for a penalty, claiming it was a handball by David Alaba. There’s nothing given, though.
