Another Real Madrid counter-attack and Benzema misses an absolute sitter after being teed up by a combination of a Vinicius Junior cross and a poor Jorginho interception. With the goal gaping, he sends his low effort wide of the far post when you’d have bet the farm on him to score.
N’Golo Kante – surprisingly – is one of the men to make way and Andreas Christensen, who had a torrid first-half, is the other, so there’ll be a tweak to the shape. Mateo Kovacic is going through quite a vigorous warm-up out there. Wouldn’t surprise me if we saw the Croatian before long. In fact, I’m pretty surprised he didn’t start tonight.
Vinicius break down the left, getting in behind Christensen too easily again, and delivers towards Benzema again. This time, Jorginho is there first but sliding in he does little more than poke the ball into the Madrid striker’s path. Benzema is onto it, pokes past Mendy, but past the post as well.
Well, I did say he was a threat in the air. This is the kind of cross the German can thrive on, Jorginho on the corner of the box using the angle to clip a terrific ball in behind. Havertz attacks it, gets plenty of power on his header and Courtois, though he gets a hand to it, can’t keep it out.
Mason Mount’s outswinging corner is met by a stooping Thiago Silva but the centre-back rather lets the ball hit the top of his head and it flies over the bar.
Andreas Christensen got the run-around from Vinicius Junior in the first half and has been given the half-time hook more of which anon.
