This has been one-way traffic so far. Chelsea are not just more intense but better drilled. Their passing is prompt and precise whereas United are struggling to string a pass together, with the defenders already pressured into hoofing it towards an already isolated Ronaldo.
Chelsea have been going through the motions recently but the FA Cup final is in 16 days’ time and they need to start operating at a higher tempo to prepare for Liverpool.
The worst bit about the home end being so quiet at the moment is that we have to listen to Chelsea’s fans instead. Wit hasn’t yet been invented in that corner of West London. It’s been all Chelsea on the pitch so far as well. United have had problems against wing-backs this season and this is shaping up to be another long night.
Kante bursts forward and United’s midfield is nowhere to be seen – how many times have we said that this season – before playing Havertz in for a chance.
United are playing as if Chelsea’s 3-4-3 is some kind of a surprise to them. The gaps in the United team are as wide as the gulf between the two teams in the table. This is a desperate performance ftom a tactical point of view. The players have clearly had enough of Rangnick and his messages cannot be getting through. If this is his plan then Austria should be looking elsewhere.
Rangnick has just told Rashford and Elanga to swap wings. Rashard hasn’t been tracking James’ runs and perhaps that tactical switch is because Elanga actually will.
