There appears to be a pattern: United attacks and attempts to locate Rashford, who is circling high on the left, while Liverpool passes the ball around. This time, it doesn’t work because McTominay’s long ball is blocked.
McTominay had space and time on his side, but he mishits the ball, heading left to no one when his teammates were expecting him to go straight to Garnacho. Although he is not a terrific passer, he is a tremendous servant to the club.
For the first time, Liverpool has some advanced possession, but Manchester United reclaims the ball by acting like tigers. When they needed it for the home matches against Palace, Bournemouth, and Fulham, where was that.
Similar story at the other end: Robertson floats a lovely cross in, but nobody can get their head to it. The chance falls to Gomez, who skies it and maintains his immaculate record of never scoring a goal.
Manchester United are still in the mood. A couple of sharp interceptions give the ball to Garnacho, who draws not one attempted foul but two. The second succeeds, so United have a free kick. The centre-backs go up and Fernandes’ long ball is a good one, apart from not having anyone on the end of it.
